Abigail Jane
There is so much joy in making a quilt for someone you love. I get great satisfaction out of picking a pattern, selecting colors, and determining the right pantograph for the recipient of my quilts. Knowing that the people I love are such an important part of why I quilt I figured that naming my quit patterns after those people was the perfect way to come up with names for my quilts. My first pattern is Abigail Jane, named after one of my biggest supporters, who has been with me through some crummy and some great moments in my life.
Abby entered my life by coincidence, and I am forever grateful that we both ended up renting a room in the same house. We bonded over both having studied abroad in London, we found out that we have a lot of people in common, she is an eldest daughter like myself. Six years later and she is still one of the first people I tell when I wreck my car or get good news at work.
One day we got together to craft. Abby brought a vintage cutter quilt that she found at an antique store and a shacket of hers. She somehow created a pattern for a quilt coat just by tracing the shacket. I watched her in disbelief. I was prepared for this venture of hers to be a complete disaster, but somehow it worked out and it worked out good. I still don’t understand how she did it and the confidence she had that it would work out is something that I will never experience in my life. This moment will be a core Abby memory of mine forever.
The colors of the Abigail Jane cover quilt are inspired by Abby. She can pull of neon bright colors like they were made for her, especially on her nails. The pattern itself is a play off a very classic log cabin block, almost as if it were a quit that you would find at a thrift store which would make it perfect for a future quilt coat.
